On This Day in 1776
#OnThisDay in 1776 in New York, General George Washington received a copy of the Declaration of Independence and a request from President of the Congress John Hancock to “have it proclaimed at the Head of the Army in the Way, you shall think most proper.”
That evening, thousands of Continental soldiers marched to the parade grounds in Lower Manhattan, where General Washington had ordered them to assemble to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud.
He also sent a copy of the Declaration of Independence to General Artemas Ward, to be read to the American soldiers in Massachusetts.
