On This Day in 1776

#OnThisDay in 1776 in New York, General George Washington received a copy of the Declaration of Independence and a request from President of the Congress John Hancock to “have it proclaimed at the Head of the Army in the Way, you shall think most proper.”⁣⁣

That evening, thousands of Continental soldiers marched to the parade grounds in Lower Manhattan, where General Washington had ordered them to assemble to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud.⁣⁣

He also sent a copy of the Declaration of Independence to General Artemas Ward, to be read to the American soldiers in Massachusetts.⁣⁣
